How to Turn Windows Update Restart Notifications On or Off

Windows 10 will notify you when Windows Updates are ready to install. You may see a popup window and a notification in the system tray. Advanced users might want to disable these notifications.

Windows 10 build 17704 or later is required.



1:Turn On or Windows Update Restart Notifications in Settings

Click Start > Settings Update & security > Windows Updates > Advanced Options.



Turn on or off Show a notification when your PC requires a restart to finish updating.



1:Turn On or Windows Update Restart Notifications in Group Policy

Windows 10 Home users will want to enable Group Policy Editor (It's easy).

Open Group Policy Editor and go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update.

Double-click Turn off auto-restart notifications for update installations.

Click Enabled to disable notifications.
Click Not configured or Disabled to enable notifications.
