Spoiler Alert: How Many Letters Are in "the Alphabet"
By Timothy Tibbetts |
There's a quiz floating around on social media, especially Facebook, asking you a simple question - How many letters are in "the alphabet."
Most of the posts are similar and copied and pasted. For example:
If you are correct, I'll delete your answer. How many letters are in "the alphabet."
Some will also tag friends who they got it from and answered correctly.

Of course, most of us answer 26. Strangely enough, we've also seen people pick (most commonly) 1, 7, 8, and 10. We're not sure how they picked those numbers, but here's the answer.
In the alphabet, there are indeed 26 letters, but in "the alphabet," there are 11 letters.
Once you put "the alphabet" in quotes, you're no longer asking how many letters are in the alphabet itself, but how many letters are in the alphabet, hence 11.
