What Does Tea Mean?
By Timothy Tibbetts |
If you've heard the slang term tea, here's all you need to know.
Tea is a slang word used in place of gossip.
You can get tea, spill tea, and give tea. You can also use the letter T.

The slang tea is believed to have been used originally in drag culture, notably black drag culture. It has been used by comedians, RuPaul, and even in some Harlequin romance novels.
While many slang words and acronyms have a history based on the internet, Tea most likely gained in popularity when used in John Berendt's nonfiction bestseller Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.
In 2021 tea received some attention when the term was used at the Live From E!: Countdown to the Golden Globe by the hosts, most notably fashion stylist Nina Parker, and sent Howard Stern into a rant because while he had heard the slang, he didn't understand the use of it.
Parker had a great response stating she loved and respected Howard, and he can say anything he wants. She even agreed that he had a point.
Some of us "older" people appreciate that.
