You know that moment when your computer tells you, “Hey, your storage is full,” and you’re left wondering, How?! Well, im my case, it's usually memes. BUT, odds are, a lot of that space is wasted on duplicate files you don’t even realize are lurking around.

dupeGuru is a super-efficient tool for hunting down duplicate files on your computer. But it doesn’t just rely on identical filenames—it scans file contents and uses a fuzzy matching algorithm to identify duplicates even if the names aren’t exact matches.

This is a huge help for organizing your photo library, decluttering your music collection, or tackling messy work folders and can save you hours of manual work by finding those pesky duplicates that are hogging space.

Its fuzzy matching engine can pinpoint duplicates even when the names are slightly off. Imagine having two files named vacation_photo_2023 and vacation_photo_2023_edited; dupeGuru will still flag them. It comes with some preset modes for music, pictures and documents as well; you help speed up the search process. You can also tailor your scans with dupeGuru’s customizable matching engine and tweak its settings to target specific file types, sizes, or levels of similarity.

Worried about accidentally deleting important files? dupeGuru has a reference directory system that ensures you’re not chucking the originals. Plus, its grouping system helps you review duplicates in an organized way, so there’s no guessing game.

Using dudeGuru

When you open dupeGuru, you’ll be prompted to select one of three modes:

Standard Mode:For general file scans.
Music Mode: Optimized for scanning music files using tags (like artist, album, or title).
Picture Mode: Best for image files, using a fuzzy algorithm to detect visually similar pictures.

IMPORTANT: Then, you add 'Folders to Scan' by clicking the “+” button to add the folders or directories you want to scan. You can add your main folders like "Documents" or "Downloads" to catch widespread duplicates and you can add multiple folders if you want to scan across different locations. This is the most intuitive feature, because you tend to want to click FILE>Load Folder. But click the '+'.

Then, set your scan options. In the “Filter Hardness” bar, adjust how strictly dupeGuru matches files. For instance, a higher value means stricter matching (good for identical files). A lower value allows more flexibility, like files with slightly different names or minor differences in content. You can also use the Preferences menu to customize what dupeGuru considers a “duplicate” (e.g., by file size or file extension).

Start the Scan

Once the scan is done, you can review the results in the display window, choosing which duplicate to keep. Those you want to get rid of you can choose to remove or move. Move is a great option if you have any questions or just want a backup for Pater. You can right-click a file for additional options, like “Move to Trash”, “Copy”, or “Delete Permanently.”

Pro Tips:

Preview Files: Double-click any file in the results to preview it before deleting, especially for photos or music.

Export Results: If you want to keep a record, you can export the scan results as a CSV file for later review.

Fine-Tune Matching: Check the Preferences to adjust file comparison methods or exclude specific file types from scans.
