Error: Can't Reach Oculus Runtime Service
By Timothy Tibbetts |
If your Oculus Rift has been receiving the "Can't Reach Oculus Runtime Service" error, there's a fix available for it.
While your Oculus Rift typically updates on its own, this error, first discovered in March 2018, requires a manual patch.
First, download the patch at https://www.oculus.com/rift-patch/. Windows Defender or your antivirus may block it as an unknown file, but either whitelist it or choose Run anyway in the case of Windows Defender. While this initial error started in March of 2018, if you're experiencing an issue, it might be worth checking the patch page anyway.
Run the executable and select Repair. Now run the Oculus desktop app to continue the update. A step-by-step walkthrough is also available here.
As a bonus, anyone who ran Rift on or before February 1st will automatically receive a $15 Oculus Store credit. These typically need to be used within a year. This credit could take up to seven days to show up.
If you're not having the "Can't Reach Oculus Runtime Service" error, then odds are your Oculus Rift was updated to 1.24 without issue. You should have received an email about this error, but we wanted to share it for those who didn't receive the email or missed it.
