If you use File Explorer search frequently, you can use the star rating system to assign 1-5 stars to many file types to locate them easily at any time.

Before you get started, it's important to note that not all file types, including PNG and GIF, are supported. This is why many third-party apps, including Far Manager and Everything, are popular replacements for file management.

We need to rate some files; then, we can search for those files later.

Video tutorial:

How to Find Files Quickly in Windows 10 With Star Ratings - Rating Files

Open File Explorer and locate a file you'd like to rate. It's a good idea to use different ratings for different file types to find different files as needed. For example, you could rate JPG files 5 stars and MP4 files 4 stars.

Right-click on the file you want to rate. Click on the Details tab.

Click one of the stars to rate from 1-5.

Click OK.

Repeat this step as many times, using as many 1-5 stars as needed.

How to Find Files Quickly in Windows 10 With Star Ratings - Finding Files

Open File Explorer and click on the drive you want to search.

In the search box (Search Local Disk), type in Rating: 5 stars, replacing 5 with whatever stars you're looking for. Press Enter or click the blue arrow to the left to begin your search.

While the overall search can be time-consuming, the files you have starred should appear immediately.
