What Does TBH Mean?

The internet is full of acronyms, and TBH is one that you might have heard. Over the years, the meaning has changed.
Acronyms are abbreviations of words used to cut down on the time it takes to type. Acronyms are often typed and easier to understand when typed in capital letters.
There's no shame in seeing an acronym you don't recognize, and it's happened to everybody (or it eventually will).
TBH means “To Be Honest” in most cases.
Originally in the 90s, TBH was used in Internet Relay Chat (IRC) or message boards. Back then, the meaning was more likely To Be Heard since no one was actually being heard. It was also used for bluntness, flattery, or to be insulting.
Somewhere about 2016, using TBH was no longer accepted by the teen crowd, and it was reinvented as an "Instagram currency," as first reported by Business Insider. TBH was a way to get people to like your images, get a confidence boost, or try to make a connection.
As of 2020, it appears to be going away, most likely due to abuse of people trying to gain followers rather than use it as intended in the Instagram way. Luckily, I'm not a teenager, so I must have napped through the whole Instagram TBH thing. Too bad, it was a nice idea.
So, here we are, TBH has always been, and probably always will be To Be honest. Of course, being honest is the best way, TBH.
TBH, like many acronyms, can be used as lowercase or uppercase.
