What to Do When Your Norton or McAfee Antivirus Expire
By Timothy Tibbetts |
Most computers come bundled with an antivirus program to protect you. Often, these are trials lasting up to one year, and McAfee and Norton are often the ones bundled on OEM computers. In this tutorial, we explain the insanity and give our advice on what you should do.
Here's a surprise for you. Two of the consistently top-rated antivirus programs are Kaspersky (Russia) and BitDefender (Romania). If you want the best antivirus and don't mind paying, those are the two we'd consider.
Video tutorial:
Times have changed, and free antivirus programs no longer exist. They are either Ad-Supported (shows ads for other products or offer professional version), or Freemium (limited features unless you purchase an upgrade). Many so-called free antivirus programs are now bloated. We even had to write a tutorial on how to install Avast as a lightweight antivirus.
But there's good news. Windows Defender is a free antivirus included with Windows. Years ago, no geek would use Windows Defender. But, starting with Windows 10, Microsoft added Windows Security and merged Windows Defender Antivirus into that.
Windows Defender is not the highest-rated antivirus, but it is more than capable for most users. Remember that all antivirus apps have their strengths and weaknesses.
Here's the good news. Uninstall your current antivirus, and Windows Security will automatically take over. For free.
You can uninstall your current antivirus in Start > Settings > Apps, but we recommend, and use IObit Uninstaller because the Windows Uninstaller will leave lots of files and registry entries behind. McAfee users can download McAfee Removal Tool, and Norton users can download Norton Removal Tool.
In IOBit Uninstaller, check your antivirus product, and click on Uninstall. Remove any leftover remnants when asked.
