When searching for Group Policy Editor, or gpedit.msc, you might receive a message that reads, "Windows cannot find "gpedit.msc." Make sure you've typed the name correctly, and then try again."

Group Policy Editor is an invaluable tool for customizing or changing Windows 10 or 11. Many of the settings you can change are also available using the Registry Editor. If you're trying to modify a Windows setting using the Group Policy Editor, you might see if you can find the same setting in the registry.

1: Windows Cannot Find GPEDIT.MSC - Windows 10 or 11 Home Editions

Group Policy Editor only comes with Windows 10 & 11 Professional. If you're not sure, press the Windows key + R, type in winver, and press Enter.

If you see Windows 10 or 11 Home, you can't run Group Policy Editor.

That's OK; we have a batch file that can enable it for you. It's been used by hundreds of thousands of people.

If you have Windows 10 or 11 Professional, you can try some other steps.

2: Windows Cannot Find GPEDIT.MSC - System File Checker

Before running the System File Checker, Windows 10 & 11 users will need first to run the Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) tool. DISM will use Windows Update to provide any files needed to fix corruption. If you skip this step, System File Checker might not work.

Open Windows Terminal, Command Prompt or PowerShell as administrator.

Type in DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth and press enter. This may take a few minutes.

Type in sfc /scannow and press the Enter key.

3: Windows Cannot Find GPEDIT.MSC - Reset

There aren't many reasons from here for Group Policy Editor to disappear. You might consider restoring from a Restore Point or even
resetting or reinstalling Windows.
