You'll Need a New App to Open This MS-Gamingoverlay Link
By Timothy Tibbetts |
When pressing Win+G to open Game Mode, you might receive an error that reads You'll need a new app to open this ms-gamingoverlay link. Here's how to fix that issue.
Often this particular error appears after you used a third-party app like O&O App Buster to remove Windows apps or bloat. There are a few options to get rid of this error message.
1: Try the Link
Click the link to the Microsoft Store and install the Xbox Game bar if that's an option. The option may be greyed out, or you might already have the Xbox Game Bar installed.
2: Disable Options
The most common solution is to disable the recording of game clips, screenshots, and broadcasting. Depending on your Windows 10 version, you might find this setting in two different places. The change happened in Windows 10 Build 1904, although the difference is minor and easy to figure out.
Search for and open Game Mode or go to Start > Settings > Gaming.
Build 1903 and Prior: Click on Game bar. Uncheck the box next to Record game clips, screenshots, and broadcast using Game bar.
Build 1904 and Later: Click on Xbox Game Bar. Uncheck the box next to Enable Xbox Game Bar for things like recording game clips, chatting with friends, and receiving game invites.
3: PowerShell
If all else fails, open PowerShell as admin and type in:
Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)AppXManifest.xml”}
Another PowerShell command that has solved the problem is uninstalling the Xbox Game Bar, and then you can reinstall.
Type in:
Get-AppxPackage *xboxapp* | Remove-AppxPackage
Reinstall Xbox Game Bar from the Microsoft Store.
