Most of us rely on Power Options to decide when our monitor turns off. In this tutorial, we give you the option of only turning off your monitor as needed on demand.

We love this option because we can walk away from our computer and quickly turn the screen blank, instead of waiting for the monitor timer to turn off. Laptop and tablet users can benefit from longer battery life too.

Video tutorial:

This batch file simply calls a PowerShell command.

Download Turn Off Monitor Only on Demand Batch File and extract Turn Off Monitor Only MajorGeeks.bat.

Double-click Turn Off Monitor Only MajorGeeks.bat.

Your screen will now go blank.

Another option, shown in the screenshot, is to create a shortcut to the batch file and change the icon. Right-click on the shortcut and click on Properties.

Click on Change icon, and choose from one of the available icons. If no icons are available type in %SystemRoot%\System32\SHELL32.dll next to the Browse button, and click OK.

This tweak is included as part of MajorGeeks Registry Tweaks.
