Nemp is a free and feature-rich portable music player for Windows that excels at managing large collections of music with its powerful media library. In addition to standard features, it boasts some unique capabilities, such as an integrated web server for remote control of the player and various gadgets like a "Happy-Birthday-Timer" that can automatically insert a birthday song into the playlist at specified times.
One of Nemp's most distinctive features is its ability to support metadata in Opus files and cover art in Ogg-Vorbis comments, both in Ogg and Opus files. Moreover, users can now utilize some Winamp DSP plugins with Nemp, such as the Shoutcast plugin, allowing it to function as a source for web radio.
Nemp version 5 represents a major redesign of the software, with large portions of the code rewritten from scratch. A notable change is the introduction of categories in the media library, enabling users to segment their collection into different sections tailored to their preferences. The arrangement in the tree view has also been enhanced, along with improved album recognition and numerous other improvements.
New features in version 5 include an online help file and a more intuitive user interface. Users can easily fill their playlists using drag & drop, copy & paste, or the file selection dialog, save them for later use, and even load them from storage. Nemp's advanced metadata detection capabilities allow it to automatically identify specific tracks within encoded albums.
Nemp's media library is highly customizable, offering a range of browsing options such as album, artist, directory, release year, genre, or using the animated 3D coverflow display for viewing albums. The tag cloud feature permits users to add additional tags not limited by traditional categorization schemes. A quick search function with typo tolerance makes finding specific titles or artists effortless.
Nemp's non-intrusive nature ensures that no changes are made to music files without explicit permission, and it does not download or upload any content from the internet. This functionality allows users to try out the player risk-free. Upon initial startup, the Nemp Wizard prompts users to confirm or reject individual useful features.
A settings dialog offers additional options for customization. The Nemp Web Server enables users to access various functions of the player via a web browser, such as search and explore capabilities in the media library. Users can restrict access for their guests, allowing them to request and prioritize titles via voting, but preventing them from starting new titles frequently.
Users can also allow tracks to be downloaded to their device, although such an action is recommended only in private contexts. Nemp includes features like ReplayGain volume adjustment, an equalizer, and sound effects such as echo, playback speed, and A-B-repeat. For previewing a song on headphones during parties without interrupting the main playback, it can play a second title in parallel via a second sound card.
Nemp supports virtually all common audio formats (mp3, ogg, flac, ape, wav, wma, midi, etc.) as well as various playlist formats like m3u, m3u8, pls, asx, and wax. It reads and writes metadata in the form of ID3-Tags, APEv2-Tags, Ogg-Vorbis comments (also in .flac files), and Apple's m4a format. Metadata from Windows Media Files are read-only.
Nemp is an impressive and feature-rich music player for Windows that stands out from other players in the market due to its robust media library management capabilities, unique features, and open-source nature. Its ability to support metadata in Opus files, cover art in Ogg-Vorbis comments, and utilize some Winamp DSP plugins sets it apart from competitors. The introduction of categories in the media library and enhanced tree view arrangement make navigating large music collections more efficient and user-friendly.
